Petals of Society
Project Type
Cyanotype Photography
Date
Fall 2022
Location
Edwardsville
I created a series of six side silhouettes of six different men. Each silhouette is layered with a flower of the person chosen, whether it holds a meaning or not. I gave no opinion or input when asking each of them what flower they wanted. My reason for this is I wanted to talk about how, as a society, we tend to associate only certain things with each gender. I wanted to show a different side of men that we usually don't see in photography or online media. I found that each male already had a favorite flower, some with even a specific color. This honestly surprised me when I asked them. I used Pexels and Unsplash, two free photo websites, to find images of each flower to make digital negatives layer over the silhouettes. I edited each photograph and made six stencils of each person to use when coating the paper to create cyanotypes. I decided for this project to do cyanotypes because this method would work best with my idea. I hope that when viewers look at these silhouettes, they gain a different perspective on how we associate things with each gender. Overall, my project was successful with how it turned out and how I gained a new perspective on this project personally.
