My Story

My interest in photography and the arts started when I was younger. It was a way to express myself in a school subject where I felt I belonged and could shine. When I was in first grade, I was diagnosed with Dyslexia, which is a minimal brain dysfunction and differential brain functions in the Angular Gyrus, Wernicke's Area, or the motor cortex, which results in characteristic reading, writing, and spelling problems. The types of Dyslexia I was diagnosed with are dyseidetic and dysphonetic, which made learning a lot harder and more frustrating. I always wanted to be like everyone else, being able to quickly pick up reading, math, and writing. During my years of schooling, I realized that the arts are where I belonged and that I had a special talent and desire to create works of art and further my career in this field. Through art, I learned over the years that I no longer wanted to be like everyone else. I wanted to be Maia, which meant creating works of art about important topics and showing the world that just because I have brain dysfunction does not mean I cannot do incredible things.
